Videos and QR Codes in the Library

Many libraries now have channels on Youtube that promote the library and/or share information about books, services, and events. The following are a few libraries that do just that, and some of my favorite videos on their channels. Enjoy!

Thoughts about this video

While this video short, it shows students librarians have a fun side, and the valuable resources the library has to offer. Students will like the rock and roll theme and music.

Thoughts about this video

The video provides important information that can be viewed all at once or in sections. I like the idea of posting a link to the video on an educational site students use like Edmodo, so students can go back and view it again if they have additional questions. Students who having trouble understanding the presentation or who forget a step will appreciate that.

Thoughts on Video
Any time a student's work can be showcased for the benefit of other students I believe the opportunity must be seized. This video will resonate with students because it is about a very talented student who they probably see in the school hallways all the time. This helps students feel connected and know that their hard work is noticed.

Thoughts on Video

This video is one of my favorites because it addresses an important issue for students - where to find copyright and creative commons friendly photographs. I have noticed some students will only gravitate to shorter videos, and this one is quick but informative too.

Thoughts on video

This video highlights a set of events connected to black history month. I recommend watching the video because it features the student as well as the library services. Students will enjoy the music and focus on them, but librarians will see the research and history of hip-hop cleverly weaved into the events shown in the video.

Thoughts on video

Here students explained a project called paper slide story. The best aspect of this video is that the students truly seem excited to explain their project and knowledgeable about the project processes. Students will enjoy the fact that other students are explaining the topics.

Thoughts on video

In this video students describe what integration means to them on various level. The video is one of my top picks because it allows students to address opinions about their lives in an important way.

Thoughts on video

Currently one of the most popular movies, (Frozen) is a great way to spread the message of overdue books. Students will be reminded in a way that is friendly but memorable. Much more efficient than nagging in my opinion.

Libraries are finding news ways to use videos all the time. Below is a growing list of some observations I have made about how the best libraries are working to make the library a desirable place to learn and hang out.

Now, on to QR codes and book trailers.

The book trailer you will find if you scan the QR code below is for the The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly. My experience using Animoto would have to be rated as a 10 out of 10. The site was easy to use and offered me some creative templates or styles for my video. Animoto is awesome because it gives you pictures, video clips, and audio to accompany your video all within the website. While the selection of free materials through Animoto is not extensive, it is definitely more than enough to make a basic video. For additional pictures, I used Flickr. This is a site dedicated to photo sharing. In order to avoid any copyright issues, I used the collection of creative commons photographs that can be selected simply by clicking on the license drop down bar at the top of the screen. Honestly and truly, I enjoyed using Animoto. Uploading images and organizing pictures was as easy as clicking and dragging the images into place. Please enjoy the book trailer, and sign up for an Animoto account today!

High in his attic bedroom, twelve-year-old David mourns the death of his mother. He is angry and alone, with only the books on his shelf for company. But those books have begun to whisper to him in the darkness, and as he takes refuge in his imagination, he finds that reality and fantasy have begun to meld. While his family falls apart around him, David is violently propelled into a land that is a strange reflection of his own world, populated by heroes and monsters, and ruled over by a faded king who keeps his secrets in a mysterious book... The Book of Lost Things.

An imaginative tale about navigating the journey into adulthood, while doing your best to hang on to your childhood.
